About Frank

Frank Joubert

Born 1948- Johannesburg, South Africa
I have always had an interest in art and started drawing at a very early age mostly in the field of wild life and portraiture, using pencil charcoal and pastels.
The only formal training I received was at high school and at the Johannesburg School of Art, with the intention of starting a career in commercial art.
As a young boy, I was fascinated by the work of my father’s good friend, Douglas Watt a sign writer by trade, I used to marvel at his work of seascapes and still life; oil on canvas, and still have some of his work today.
It was my love of the bushveld, having spent most of my school holidays on a farm, in the Hoedspruit, Klasere area, where my great interest in nature conservation began. Most of my inspiration comes from my memories of those days, and visits to the South African game parks and the Natal Drakensburg.
I work in all mediums but prefer oil on canvas. Favorite subjects are portraiture and wild life, and sea scapes I can probably say that I am quite a versatile painter, and still do a lot of pencil work, a wise old man once told me, “ if you can draw with a pencil you will be able to paint with a brush “.
At the age of twenty I stopped painting completely to take up other interests and only started painting again in 1998.
Most of my work has been sold off privately. I have taken part in some group exhibitions, but mostly have done a lot of commission work.
Some of my recent work hangs in corporate buildings, receptions and board rooms
