About Mike

Mike Valentine

Rozier Michael Valentine: Taken to painting full time since his retirement in 1995 after 30 years in the advertising/commercial art field, Mike (Who is also a published poet and lyricist) now lives and works from his home on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. He is a past member of the Durbanville Cultural Society.

During a recent interview, he had the following to say about his work:

In the execution of my paintings, I find not only the release from pent-up emotions evoked by the subjects that inspire me but a means by which I can express an appreciation of nature, its textures, colours and shapes, and the mood-altering effects of light and shadow on every feature of every element. Landscapes and wild life are favorite subjects of mine and although I am inclined toward realism, it is in the creation of the illusion of reality through a kind of impressionism that motivates and dictates my interpretation of the subject. There is also a lot of emotion involved. Consequently, many of my works tend toward expressions of reality that incorporate an element or some sense of the dramatic, the mundane or the profound in the finished work. This deliberate dramatization is an attempt to convey or enhance the features of reality without resorting to photographic detail. The Belgian artist Rene Magritte put it in a nutshell with his painting of a pipe entitled This is not a pipe. And just as his pipe is not a pipe, my landscapes are not landscapes they are images of landscapes. Celebrations of the sense of sight, the sunlight, and the ambiance of the African scene. Expressions of a love for my homeland. In short,- love letters in paint.
