About "Defiance"

The subject seems defiant and animated in the face of the tyranny of her surrounds. The varnished paint and the dark, contrasty background elevates the piece to the feel of the classical images of the old masters. Her satin skin and finely detailed face together with the cool colours in the folds, borders and layering of the dress is brought forward by the dark, warm colours and rough textures of the rocks, sticks and leaves.
