About "Elephants"

What struck me most about this picture were the size of the elephants tusks and the baby next to him, who has no tusks yet.

About Ricky and Maristha

Ricky and Maristha Smitsdorff

My name is Ricky Smitsdorff. I am 56 years old. I live in Port Elizabeth in South Africa. This is the space where Maristha and I share the images we have captured.

I have had a passion for photography since I was a teenager. My genres are mainly wildlife, nature, some abstract and portraits of people. Living in South Africa, we have a wealth of wildlife and capturing any wild animal in its natural state of existence is something that I can appreciate and it makes me more privileged that I can have the opportunity to catch great shots of them.

The excitement for in capturing a picture, either it is of wildlife or nature, is that I have captured a picture which, once it has been taken, is frozen in time. And the uniqueness of it is that no matter how old it is, it still represents that moment in time when it was taken, and unique in the sense that this particular picture lives on , as long as it is in any form. One can relive one`s life through the pictures one captures.

Having no other skills as an artist of any kind, I find I have a good eye for a picture and am always looking for a unique or different picture to take. My main camera I use is a Panasonic Lumex digital camera.

I have had a lot of pictures printed in local newspapers. The main attribute for a photographer is to have patience at all times, as the picture you are looking for will eventually come.

Maristha is an artist and amateur photographer with a keen eye for picking out patterns, texture and colour. She loves being in nature searching out areas of interest in a landscape setting and to create abstractions from those images.
