About Mary Anne

Mary Anne Lang

GYPSY ARTIST by Bev Young

The passion and excellence of a true artist, is the ability to paint with an adult mind, yet retain the simplicity and clarity of a child. Children observe shape, form, and colour in the most uncomplicated manner. Many trained artists strive for this quintessence attribute, but tend at times to lose the capacity since training can restrict their very core.

Examples of the artists that have delved into their child-eye being Picasso and Matisse.

Mary Anne Lang of Port Alfred a mom and teacher of art to children spends her time painting up a storm in her little studio on the marina. This delightful gypsy artist has managed to capture the influence of African in a manner born! Her passion for colour and simplicity stems from her experience of living and teaching in the Wild Coast.

Trained as a pre-school teacher she taught art at the Umtata Pre-Primary School for many years and it is here that the school revolutionised the addition of black pupils. The then President of the Transkei Kaiser Matamzima sent his grandchildren to learn from Mary Anne.

Marriage to her spouse Shane saw Mary Anne moving to the magnificent hamlet of Hole-In-The Wall where she spent her time, in-between babies, studying the rural people, their cultures and dabbling in freelance painting. It was here that her very soul embraced the simplicity of the colours and forms around her.

The eventual move to East London three years later settled Mary Anne into opening a pre-school at her home in Vincent Park. ]Kiddi Kraft pre-school painting classes, taking in children from as young as three years old, was an immense hit with parents and children alike. Nine years later, the Langs retired to Port Alfred where Mary Anne now paints.

Mary Anne says that her learnership in terms of art has evolved over the years and she is grateful for all the influences. From her mentors Anna Nockholds in Umtata, where she tried to perfect her oil routines, to Bobby Vosloo a well-known water-colourist, she has been able to explore her creativity and honed her skills to produce her magical quirky renditions of life through her perceptions.

*Exhibition in Port Elizabeth from 7th-22nd November for EPSAC. (Eastern Province Society for Art and Craft.)

She has had many one-man exhibitions, and exhibited in many galleries. Her work can be seen at the Gallery on the Square in Port Alfred. She signs her work MAL.
