About Bert
Studied Fine Arts at U/Pretoria. Taught at a few art schools and served as art director for various South African Art Galleries. Startedc fish paintings in 1984v while living on the Kaaimans River near Wilderness - exchanging fresh caught fish species for glass of sherry from cold and wet fishermen going out from the river mouth. In this wat I could study the species. natural colouring, anatomy and features. Each scale is counted along the bodyline including its number of rakers, spines and special features that is then annotated onto the painting (choice. Later joined MCEN (Marine Coastal Education Network) of DEAT and started establishing a data base of species along the Western Cape, Southern Cape, Transkei and Natal coasts.(commissions taken - indicate sizes, species and medium please) Other painting projects include A4 water colours of fish species (including all fresh water species like trout, bass, tiger, yellows and carp. Also San Rock Art products following three years of research into San Cosmology and Symbolism (Study Paper available) My passion is for exacting work requiring research and detail reflected in the annotations that invariably becomes a point of discussion about the art work.....the colours of feshly caught species are noted at the point of capture or close thereafter.
