About Tersa
Throughout my life I have been involved in many different art forms. As a child I enjoyed drawing and my favourite pastime was doing figure studies and portraits. I started painting in watercolour, acrylics and oil and drew great inspiration from the works of the Impressionists, conceptually and in their use of colour. I especially loved Van Gogh’s bold use of vibrant, contrasting colours.
After completing my schooling I studied Fine Arts and developed a keen interest in three dimensional works and have been doing ceramics and sculpture since then. I regularly exhibited over the years and explored many different mediums. I also do mosaics by using my own handmade tiles combined with commercial glass tiles to make various decorative pots and wall hangings.
Currently I do genre paintings – people in everyday, ordinary situations – as well as landscapes in oil, acrylics and watercolor. I explore the calm serenity of the Free State countryside in contrast to the busier street scenes and inner city life as this part of the world has been my life for the past twenty odd years. Bloemfontein and the surrounding area is known for the endless open spaces, with beautiful bold clouds and blue skies in contrast to the earthy yellows, red and browns of the grasslands and the farming soil. In town you get the chance to experience a sense of life and here you meet people from very different cultures and backgrounds, as Bloemfontein is demographically very central in South Africa. I believe that this lovely, peaceful place is the heart of our beautiful country.
I use my life, experience and the exposure to various mediums of art to communicate serenity and joy in the simple things of life to the spectator. Each new artwork is completely unique and has a character and atmosphere of its own.
