About "Gaint Kingfisher"

The focus of this painting is the firey eye of the Gaint Kingfisher as it glears out of the black crested head. The lifeless fish looks up pleading for mercy from it's impending doom. The drama is not lost against foliage or water but flattens into an unexpected background. This painting is held together with rich confident brushstrokes.

About Michael

Born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Michael moved to South Africa in 1980 to study Fine Art Graphics at Rhodes University, before settling in Cape Town where he has lived since 1984.

Michael is an established designer and illustrator in the Graphic Design industry where he has worked for the past twenty years. He has always realised that this career, although exciting and challenging, does not allow an artist the freedom to exclusively express his own ideas and concepts. Painting on the other hand allows for individual expression.

Michael is continuously searching for subject matter that portrays a positive image of life in Africa without the images becoming romantic. The paintings are a study of life as it is. The portraits are of real life people.

Michael believes that the San rock artists were the greatest of all wildlife painters, because of their absolute understanding of the animals they shared their lives with, being able to describe their characteristics with a few incredible brushstrokes on the rock surface. These paintings found throughout southern Africa have a great spiritual influence on Michael[0x1]s work, his animals are alive with expression and look out from the canvas with a character all of their own. He believes that one important aspect of painting a portrait is expressing the personality of your subject with effective brush work and not over painting with detail.

The focus of his latest works is the South African soccer supporters and the colourful makarabas (hard hats) they wear. The inspiration for his works was drawn from the passion and enthusiasm of the soccer supporters and the unique characteristics of each makaraba. The makarabas are individually handcrafted. Not only do the makarabas reflect the team colours and logo but also the logos of the corporates who sponsor the team. Each makaraba is hand cut, trimmed and hand painted. It takes approximately 4 days to complete a makaraba depending on the complexity of the cut and the intricacy of the paint work.

His love of paint, his mix of colour and his quick confident brushstrokes continue to evolve. Michael is not content with one style and likes to experiment with different painting techniques to find other ways to express his visions.
