About "Gloom"

My inspiration came from visiting Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg, where prisoners from the apartheid era was kept.
This painting is the isolation cells in the women's section of the prison. I went into one of the cells, closed the door behind me, I sat on the floor for around fifteen minutes. The emotions was overwhelming, I had a tiny little taste of what those women had to endure it those cells. It was horrific.
