About "Hang On"
For tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today' - African proverb During the time I worked on my Master's Degree, I travelled extensively through Africa in order to collect research material. I've always had a true love and respect for this mystical, wild continent. It deepened though my travels as I got to know the land, the culture, the people and animals. Later in life, as the growing threat on our Rhino population escalated, I grew more and more aware of this problem. As a result, I am deeply concerned about the destruction that is taking place. During 2014, in South Africa alone a staggering 1,215 rhinos were killed by poachers. That's one every eight hours. Having two young children of my own I realised that their children will never have the privilege to experience these powerful creatures. Every person on earth has a responsibility as a human being not to allow this graphic cruelty in order to nurture a senseless belief. Man, woman and child. There is a saying, 'We haven't inherited the planet from our parents, we borrowed it from our children.' My exhibition is titled 'One Life'. It portrays different aspects of life. Freedom and bondage, power and vulnerability, youth and old age are contrasts in my work. I try to reach the viewer through the ways these contrasts balance. Everyone is exposed to transience. The juxtaposition between transience and youth is a big inspiration In 2016 I will be exhibiting in Lugano, Switzerland. I want to carry this message via my solo

About Sua
My main focus during my studies was the female figure. Feminism and humanism, freedom and bondage, power and vulnerability, youth and old age are contrasts in my work. I try to reach the viewer through the way these contrasts balance. Everyone is exposed to transience. The juxtaposition between transience and youth is a big inspiration.
SHORT CV Sua was born in 1969 in South Africa. She matriculated in 1986 from Three Rivers High School with a distinction in Fine Arts. She completed her Masters degree in Fine Arts at the University of Pretoria in 1994. Sua found the fine art market unsustainable and sought employment within the advertising environment. In 1997 she founded her own design and advertising agency. It has only been since 2009 that Sua has re-entered the fine arts arena for the first time after 12 years. Whilst woman and art have remained a central theme in Sua's work, the interaction between man and animal is now a visible theme.
Sua Van Der Westhuizen obtained a BA Fine Art (Sculpture), at the University of Pretoria in 1990 and a MA Fine Arts (Sculpture), at the University of Pretoria in 1994.
