About "Herdsman"
At my weekly art class this painting started out as a leopard!! After about an hour I stood back and realised it was not going to work. Taking a paint rag and some turps I scrubbed out what was there, being left with a beautifully toned canvas that was too good not to use. Declaring to Shirley my art instructor that I would like to paint a portrait. She scrabbled around in her shoe box of reference photos and pulled out a beautiful image that was the inspiration for this painting.
From the first stroke of the brush to the last little dab it was one of those paintings where the right brain took over. I could not put a foot or in this case a stroke wrong. Within two hours I declared the painting finished and signed it. I could have fussed for much longer but am glad I did not.
He is a Lesotho herdsman. Every wrinkle in his sun drenched face tells a story. Proud, dignified yet desperately poor are all reflected in the watery eyes.

About Chris
WHY DO I PAINT? I am passionate about nature, animals, people. In fact I am passionate about life, about living. My art is a celebration of life. I hope it shows!!
PAINTING STYLE A realist at heart, I strive for spontaneity in my work and paint with oils on mounted canvas or board in an impressionistic style. Whatever the subject, I enjoy using various paint textures, from a lean transparent ground to thick impasto paint in the highlight and focal areas. I have a graphic arts background and love painting African wildlife but am versatile enough to tackle any subject.
CAREER HISTORY: After receiving a Diploma in Graphic Design I started my working career in 1978. I have always worked on the creative side of various Advertising agencies including Bates Wells and McCann Erickson. Since 1990 I have run my own advertising agency.
FINE ART CAREER: I have painted on and off all my working life. Only in the past five years have I been selling work commercially rather than giving everything away as gifts to friends, family and clients. I have a small but loyal following of collectors and have sold paintings internationally and locally to private individuals and companies.
