About "Himba Carrying Maize"

Himbas are a tribe living to the north of Namibia. My inspiration for a series of Himba paintings comes from their natural beauty and resilience against modern civilization which threatens their natural way of life. The red tone of their skins is clay that they use for protection and cosmetic purposes.

About Fernando

Fernando Correia

"WHEN MAN DREAMS, HUMANITY ADVANCES!"

God, life, forces of nature, universal creativity...
... all we need is to have faith, humility to tap into our dreams and unblock the flow of creativity that is within reach of everyone who dares.

I was born in Frossos, Braga, Portugal in 1946 and am a 3rd generation artist. Son of the Late Francisco Correia, a 'sacred art' artist and maternal grandson of an impressionist.

I started my career as a textile designer in Portugal and in 1974 when I came to South Africa I worked as a graphic designer, retiring at the age of 60 to fulfill my burning desire and have more time to dedicate myself to art. I wanted to paint for the love of painting, without any pretension, but a capricious destiny had other plans. It was a surprise when I discovered that I had a gift for portraiture.

In 2009, The Walter Sisulu Pediatric Cardiac Centre for Africa invited me to donate one of my artworks to be auctioned for the raising of funds for the centre. As my contribution I painted the portrait of the Late Walter Sisulu and his wife 'Mama' Albertina which I entitled "The Sisulus" and which was acquired by HRH Princess Haya Al Hussein, wife of the Sheik of Dubai for R175000.

This was my first experience to public exposure and it made me reconsider my position as an artist and the start of an incommensurable and exciting new career.

I've exibited in a few group exhibitions in Johannesburg over the past three years and already have my art spread over five continents. I am a member of the Association of Arts, Pretoria.

I work exclusively in oil.
