About "James Joyce as a Sporting Loony" The painting, like most of my work on paper, evolved through a series of accidents that were then carefully harnessed into a precise and controlled process of working and overworking. The pastel is laid over several substrata of colour and texture. Once the image of James Joyce started to emerge, I set out deliberately to make it a portrait, but one that challenges the assumptions of the man. |
