She fell in love with painting while learning to draw for the purpose of enhancing her embroidery design work. This lead rapidly to her specializing in Portraits. During her husband, Derek s term as president Mandela s first minister of Finance she filled her time increasingly with her art, working on a steady stream of commissions that firmly established her career as a portrait painter. Many of these works have found their way into countries around the world. During her time as a member of the Portrait Society of America her work received prominent exposure at their conventions.
