About "Leopard in Focus"
Leopard in Focus
My love for animals inspired me to create this contemporary artwork of a leopard. The painting was created from a photograph, which provided the starting point for exploring the animal's character, presence, and distinctive patterns through my own artistic interpretation.
Leopard in Focus explores the relationship between awareness, instinct, and the ability to remain focused in a world of distraction and uncertainty.
The leopard emerges from a complex field of fragmented marks, earthy tones, and dark patterns that echo its natural camouflage. Rather than presenting the animal as a completely defined figure, I have allowed it to merge with its surroundings. This suggests how the leopard can remain hidden, watchful, and alert while observing the world around it.
At the center of the painting is the eye, which becomes the main point of focus. The eye represents heightened awareness and perception--the ability to see clearly even when everything around us appears chaotic or unclear. Its green tones create a moment of calm and intensity within the otherwise earthy, restless composition.
The contrasting black, white, ochre, and burnt-orange marks create a sense of movement and tension. They suggest both the leopard's energy and the unpredictability of its environment. The fragmented surface also reflects the idea that what we see is not always the complete picture; sometimes we need to look carefully to discover what is hidden.
Ultimately, Leopard in Focus is about staying alert and maintaining clarity amid confusion. The leopard becomes a symbol of instinct, resilience, patience, and inner strength--quietly watching, waiting, and remaining focused.

About Salome
Salome High is a contemporary South African artist who studied Fine Art at the University of Pretoria. Her work reflects the spirit of the times, embracing the ever-evolving zeitgeist while remaining rooted in a philosophy of simplicity. Inspired by Le Corbusier's famous maxim, "Less is more," she seeks to distill her subjects to their essential beauty and character. Working primarily from photographic references, Salome transforms observed reality into expressive, contemporary artworks. Her current body of work focuses on wildlife, capturing the strength, elegance, and individuality of each animal through a fresh artistic perspective. By introducing subtle elements of glamour and refinement, she creates a unique visual dialogue that celebrates the natural world while inviting viewers to see familiar subjects in a new light.
