About "Magdalena From the Knersvlakte" This work is part of a series of three that I have painted of my artist friend, Magdalena Adolph in 2018. In this painting she is wearing a Voortrekker bonnet that she had made for herself to wear in the arid climate of Vanrhynsdorp. She originally hails from Namibia and can speak fluent Nama which is but one aspect that make her a remarkable person . Magdalena, also called Lena by her friends took part in body mapping workshops that I facilitated in 2014 and 2015 where she played an integral part in energizing the group. She was also instrumental in the success of the inter-generational aspect of the workshop. I especially admire Lena for her indigenous knowledge, survival skills and her positive attitude towards life. During these workshops she testified to the therapeutic value of art practice, dance and storytelling in her life. |

Desiree likes to explore different media such as oils, acrylics, pastels, cont. and drawing inks, however she always returns to sculpting, her subject mostly being the human form. The artist prefers a slightly idealized naturalistic style when sculpting portraits. Her sculpture medium varies from wood, ceramic, clay cast in cement fondue, mosaic and bronze.
