About "Mandela - Original Tuffee" Many things influence a piece of art in my case i was working at Philani an NGO in Khayelitsha that raised funds through arts and craft products they made for the shop. My background is graphic design and and I assisted and managed they processes for making silkscreen prints and mixed media mosciacs. One of their products was prints of iconic South African household products lion matches, impala maize meal etc. These artworks appealed to me for their stylization and use of bold technique. I had previously done a scraper board version of the iconic image of Nelson Mandela training as a boxer and I wanted to use the same image in a different way to layer ideas of humor as well as nostalgic cultural memory in a single work. I had previously been working on paintings of wilson blocks sweets which have a unique design and one day like with most things the 2 images/ideas collided and I made this work. |

"I believe that making art is a compulsive act of self expression that can only be realized through the collaborative act of creating and experiencing. Creating art for me is about constantly reflecting on my place in the reality. Using art to express a emotional and intellectual and tactile value, discovering how to distill and interpret my interaction with what surrounds me and documenting that personal relationship. Price Range US$ 46-3,680 Exhibitions His work is in many private collections in Africa, Europe, America and the U.K. and Asia Education Zonnebloem Art centre,Cape Peninsula University of Technology People who chose Gary's work also chose work by: Find other:
