Reference Kruger landscapes About "Memories of Grietjie" I've been thinking a lot about where I've come from... They say hindsight is 20/20 and while contemplating, and later making this painting, I thought a lot about the idea of hindsight and dreams... As a young man, first working in Air Traffic Control, then later as a student in conservation, and even later, while working at Onderstepoort research laboratories I had a dream of buying a small bushveld farm (who of us hasn't?)... I viewed quite a couple of small farms in the Strijdom Tunnel-area and in the Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa areas. All of them between 21ha and 28ha. (It was the only "farms" I could contemplate buying on my meagre salary). Unfortunately I never quite got what I was looking for. Some of these farms, like the small farms in Grietjie and Balule now form part if the Greater Kruger Park. If only I'd known... I should have bit the bullet and bought one... In the late 1990s, the fences between the Kruger Park and Klaserie Game Reserve, Olifants Game Reserve and Balule Game Reserve were dropped, and later also the fences between Klaserie and Umbabat. Many private reserves and farms followed suite and dropped their fences. |
