About "Monashatwa"
Earnest Malizani, a Malawian friend of the B.Slater team and all-around good guy, recently fell victim to the mindless xenophobic violence that has been plaguing Cape Town in the past few months. Whilst commuting, he was surrounded by a group of local thugs and thrown out of a moving train. His only “crime”: he was not from the local tribe.
Earnest is now recovering after surgery to repair his badly damaged ankle, however, he has been unable to work for the last month, creating serious financial hardship for his family. In order to do his part to help, Bill is donating all the proceeds of his new painting Monashatwa to Earnest.

About B
American/African artist Bill Slater draws inspiration from his voyages around the globe as a sailor, traveler and adventurer. His paintings reflect a looseness often missing in art; whimsical and carefree, yet constructed with purpose and structure. Using an elegant palette of colors as his mode of language, he creates free-flowing artwork based on his personal experiences, always pleasing to the eye and soothing to the soul. In addition to traditional painting techniques, Bill has recently begun experimenting with a mix of acrylic and digital print on canvas medium. Following some personal hardship-induced soul searching, Bill followed the path of his heroes Paul Geuguin Captain Cook and Jimmy Buffett and set off to explore both the geographical and artistic worlds. Leaving behind his hometown of McHenry, Illinois in the midwest of the USA, Bill broadened his intellectual horizons by pursuing the call of the sea. He spent several years crossing vast oceans, seeking experience and personal knowledge in his travels. Following a two-year around the world sailing expedition, Bill’s yearning for inspiration eventually drew him to his soul mate and to the city that he currently calls home, Cape Town, South Africa.
