About Johan
Johan Rabe, a qualified Civil Engineering Technician, was born in Cape Town in 1952 and was exposed to motorsport through his father from a very young age. The family attended many race meetings, and his passion for the sport, as well as for cars, became part of his life.
His favourite pastime from primary school days, was to do pencil drawings of racing cars, as well as cars in general. In later years he started working in watercolours, then oils and since 1998 he discovered that acrylics is the most suitable medium for his work.
While living in Kommetjie and Simon's Town in the 80's and early 90's, he was a member of the Fish Hoek Art Society and took part in exhibitions of the Society. He also undertook a number of commissions over the years, mostly for persons involved in motorsport or the motoring world. He is still available to take commissions.
Since moving to Oudtshoorn at the beginning of 1993, his work was selected on two occasions for the annual winter exhibition of the well-known Strydom Art Gallery in George. This resulted in some sales, but his annual exhibitions since 2010 at the George Old Car Show, as well as the Knysna Motor Shows, gave car enthusiasts the opportunity to get a real taste of his art.
Johan has become a Member of the Guild of Motoring Artists (UK) in 2014 but has since resigned to concentrate on the South African market. He write regular articles about his paintings of motoring/motorsport subjects for the SA Car Clubs magazine. Since 2016 he has again started to work in watercolours as well. His work was accepted by a local Art Gallery, Bottega, where he has a permanent stand with his non-motoring paintings.
