About "Portrait of None"

I like painting people who look nothing like me. This is based in a line sketch I took of someone who is so different from me that I needed to put it to pen and paper. I was going to file it away when I was encouraged by my spouse to paint it and I created something totally different from my usual style. I was closing shop when the buyer arrived and asked me to please wait for him while he goes to fetch money to pay for it. I remember this lawyer running in the wind with tie flapping and diving into his car to get his money. It was altogether an amusing experience: from the conception of the art piece until the sale.

About Ajzen

People interest me.

I bring what I feel about the subject I paint into the painting itself. I always fall a bit in love with my subject. Suddenly I like the eyes, or the nose or the ears.

Colour is important to me, not to shock but to convey a feeling of being alive and in the present. My colour represents what I see as if looking through a stained glass window. What you would see if you looked through the window of a church as a child.

There is a bit of fantasy in my work because I believe that life is not only what we see and hear. Much of our life we spend sleeping and the mind does not know that we are dreaming or awake, so it follows that surreal colours and dreams are part of our reality too.

Some of my work is influenced by my country of birth, Argentina, with it's magical realism in my blood, but mostly I paint the present rather than the past.
