About "Red"
Every once in a while, if you are really lucky, you get to meet someone who just gets your specific kind of crazy. For me that person was my friend, Robert McEwan. Robert and I used to work together during the day-job years, spending most of our time at work drawing, joking around, eating biltong and discussing all kinds of topics ranging from Superheroes to reincarnation. It was the Spiritual connection between us that I valued the most. It is such a rare thing to be able to connect with someone on a Spiritual level, to be able to share your thoughts and ideas about the Great Unknown without having to explain yourself and without any judgement. Apart from being an incredibly talented animator, Robert himself was but a walking cartoon, with more faces and voices than you would find in a morning of watching the Cartoon Network. He was joy personified, proud of his Scottish heritage and insanely proud of being a ginger. So, a couple of years ago, when I originally had the idea of a doing a Tribute Piece to the Archie comics, Robert was the most natural choice of portrait to join my favourite childhood comic book character on canvas. I grew up with Archie and the gang and I spent many an hour pouring over my comic books, absorbing the subtle comedy and skilled cartooning style. (To this day I still draw my female hands based on the way the Archie artists executed the hands of Betty and Veronica). The adventures of the famous red-headed teenager were filled with a remarkable sense of purity, morality and innocence (unlike the current TV Series, Riverdale, which strays disturbingly far from the original). This artwork entitled "Red" is dedicated to my friend, Robert McEwan, who lost his battle against cancer on 19 April 2017. He was 27 years old. I am blessed for knowing him and for the light and laughter that he brought to this world. And even though I couldn't be happier that he got to go home, I miss him every day. V.
