My imagery is inspired by the stark vastness of the southern Free State.Every aspect of my live is influenced by the land. I draw my inspirationfrom observing nature, always on the look for magical moments. My work has been an ongoing exploration of what it feels like to be in that space, surrounded by all that air and light, feeling the tug of the horizon 360 degrees, the sense of limitlessness and blissful isolation. It always begins with an awe-filled moment-an area with an intense contrast of light, dramatic shadows or shapes-something that will sustain my interest through the painting process. The horizon and clouds are a magnet. I'm always drawn to the distant, blue horizon and the succession of hills that create a tremendous sense of vastness. The creative process is about discovery. If you're not discovering something in each attempt, the work is probably lifeless.Rina started her career in Gauteng where she studied art at the Technicon, Pretoria. Afterwards she achieved a BA(FA) at Unisa. Later she continued with art tuition under Otto Clar and Carlo Sdoya. In 1976 Rina held a one man exhibition on invitation from the Transvaal National Museum, where she sold out. Between 1971 and 1980 she was artist-in-chief at Perskor Publishers, Jhb. Brill Bros, Jhb, manager of the art department of Consul Glass & Plastics, Wadeville and production manager at Educum Publishers, Jhb. Rina illustrated 67 children's books and received the National ATKVeertjie for the best children's book illustrations in 2000. Rina also did the graphics for several children's programs on SABC TV. Pumpkin Patch, Kideo and others. In 2001 she painted 25 contemporary paintings from the Bible Books Job and Lamentations. These paintings are now on a permanent exhibit in the Job Room, Jobhuis in Philippolis. Since 2001 Rina has been a full time artist.
