About Shubnum

Shubnum Shaikh

Shubnum Shaikh is a Durban born artist to parents of Indian origin. She currently resides in Umhlanga Rocks and has families that have had deep roots in the artistic and musical fields-with her grandfather being a renowned poet and sketch artist. She has obtained a diploma in the Art and Science of Fashion Design at the Reinier Academy of Fashion, and progressed from being a clothing manufacturing merchandiser to being appointed as the head designer in a large chain-clothing manufacturer. Her design career spanned 20 years in the fashion clothing industry, having participated and successfully receiving accolades for her various clothing designs.

Shubnum has for the last 3 years focused on the painting aspect of her creativity, partly due to family commitments together with a desire to venture in this field. What commenced as a hobby has progressed into a fully fledged passion. Painting, to Shubnum, personifies visual poetry and music. She shares thoughts and expressions through her art, to brighten the art and exemplify the beauty of God in creation. She creates inspirational artwork that focuses on love, and texture filled paintings that awake the inner senses.

The creative position of the artist is a humbling one, wherein he/she is the channel, and this cannot be more obvious than in abstract expressionist art.

Abstraction indicates a departure from reality, with the need to produce and be part of something other than the [0x1]real world[0x1]. Whilst immersed in the moment of art, the artist is often unaware of what he or she is creating and exploring. Emotions and uncertainties- all play out on canvas. Her paintings are a natural growth out of a need which she expressed on canvas.

As an up-and-coming artist, she has captured the attention of the peers and colleagues alike with her natural ability to portray various situations. Her use of vivid colours, very much inherited from her Indian background, truly displays her talents in colour co-ordinations and usage.
