Takura Chadoka
About Takura
Since emigrating from Zimbabwe to South Africa,Takura Chadoka (b.1986) has steadily developedhis own particular style of painting driven by aneed to express his inner feelings and life-changingexperiences as an emigr[0xC3A9] and new father, amongstothersThe harsh economic environment in Zimbabweforced an end to his studies at the National Galleryof Zimbabwe School of Art, and he has for the past8 years been based in the Western Cape wherehe has an established studio and screen-printingenterprise.Chadoka's work has seen a dramatic conceptualand technical shift, with this most recent seriesof paintings created around the demise of formerpresident of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe. With much of his earlier work created in the 'typical'style of Zimbabwean painting aimed at a largelytourist market, Chadoka's new work has maturedsignificantly with this deeply reflective series dealingwith political developments in the artist's homecountry and his personal life. Chadoka is multi-skilled and his new series of self portraits combinethe flat quality of screen printing with the painterlyquality of colour washes.Driven by survival instinct as much as creativepassion and collaborative practice, he is involvedin numerous projects simultaneously includinganimation workshops at the 'Art Zoo' studio, large-scale sculptural work in wire, paper and cement anda mechanised piece planned for AfrikaBurn 2018.As a profitable sideline, Chadoka produces T-shirtsprinted with bicycle motifs under his own label:Young Forever Clothing, which are marketedand sold across the Cape Town metropole andsurrounding markets. He has exhibited his work in various venuessince 2008 including AVA Gallery, Cape Town,Clock Tower Gallery, G2 Art Gallery Cape Town,The Framery Gallery Sea Point, Kalk Bay Gallery,Kunstehuijs Gallery in Swellendam and KleinmondHarbour Gallery.
