About John

John Meyer was born in Bloemfontein in 1942. He studied at the Johannesburg Technical College School of Art after which he joined an advertising agency. In 1967 Meyer settled in London where he continued his studies in art while working as a freelance illustrator. He subsequently pursued an international career as an artist, and is best known for his portraits of distinguished people in Africa, Europe and the United States and for his landscapes of South Africa. He has exhibited widely in the United States, in Europe, as well as in his home city which is now Johannesburg.

Decidedly contemporary in his vision and a proponent of modernism in all its guises, John Meyer has a considerable commitment to representational painting. This collection is a personal response to the South African environment. Here John Meyer presents us with a breath of our natural landscape unlikely to been seen together again as a collection of work of this scope. It is his insight into the diversity of the South African landscape and, at a time when there is enormous pressure on man's natural world, it reminds us of our responsibilities to care for our heritage. It is in this spirit that the collection was created
