About Cecily

Cecily Pohl

My work is about South Africa my country and its people. The mental and physical state of being a South African citizen. I see us as a broken demoralised nation. We are in distress, we face issues that all of us are familiar with; Power failures, the Rand that has entered a freefall, crime, price increases, our political leaders, we are unsure of our future, and these issues touch every single South African. I would like to address this state of hopelessness and HOPE in my work.

Jody Kollapen, chair person of the South African Human rights commission stated the other day “fourteen years into democracy, we haven’t yet come to terms with understanding the values of our constitution and just understanding the simple concept that we share a common humanity. Every South African is entitled to the respect for their dignity”

Human rights refers to the basic rights of freedom to which all humans are entitled. Examples of rights and freedom which are often thought of as human rights include, civil and political rights, such as the right to life and liberty, freedom of expression and equality before the law, social, cultural and economic rights, including the right to work and the right to education.

“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in spirit and brotherhood”

The South African nation is suffering mentally and physically, from a personal conduct – in various ways, people find meaning in their lives by striving against suffering; suffering may lead to bitterness, depression, hate or anger; but also to character building, spiritual growth or moral achievement; realizing the extent or gravity of suffering in the world may motivate to relieve it and give an inspiring direction to one’s life.

The birds in each work of art carries significant symbolic meaning like Hope, New Growth, Peace, Love and Freedom. Like the phoenix from the flames a renewed life, freeing of the spirit. South African woman are tired of knitting with burnt pieces of wire, instead of soft colourful wool. The baking trays a symbol of home and female presence. Woman, comfort, nourish and we are strong! The barren landscape, the distress of the nation. The photos the past the colours the future.

The final ambiance or interpretation is thus determined by the observer, while the artwork becomes the vessel of that moment or emotion, may it be Love, Hope, Spirit, Faith, Truth or Passion.
