About Bob

Christened Louis van Wyk, I sculpt under the name of Bob van Wyk. I studied part-time for 10 years at Natal Technical College under Mary Stainbank, while raising a family. My first one-man show was held when I was 37 years old. Many successful one-man shows followed, including an invitation by the National Gallery Pretoria. I also represented South Africa at an exhibition in Germany. I have now also started carving with chainsaws and have alreadt completed three Dragons

Some of my early bronze statues were esoteric, but I mainly sculpted everyday street scenes. Wood as a medium, drives me to use the beauty of the human form to complement that of the wood being used.

My work presently is indicative of the earth's early mysteries which hold a great fascination for me. As such I was driven to publish a book. I continue to pursue this avenue of writing and exploration.

The human condition is what intrigues me most and is reflected in the majority of my work.

To relax, I write poetry and do wood turning.
