About "SideKick"
"SideKick" is dedicated to the DC Comics character, Robin, that fearless and faithful companion to the mighty Batman who eventually became a Superhero in his own right. Robin is -as far as I know- the only Superhero who has been represented by different fictional characters including a woman, Stephanie Brown.
I must admit that I've always felt somewhat sorry for Robin: apart from the usual "always the bridesmaid, never the bride" stigma that seem to follow the average Superhero Sidekick (in specific reference to the 2005 movie, Sky High), the poor kid also had to endure almost a century of dodgy jokes about him being Batman's boyfriend. I'm pretty sure that must take its toll on any hero...
The Artwork was inspired by a photograph of Dawn J. Kiesling that I stumbled upon during a midnight quest for inspiration for "The Working Man" Painting Series. (Thank you, Dawn!)
I was immediately captivated by the high contrast image and the idea of incorporating elements of Robin's Superhero suit almost instantly popped into my imagination.
I loved the idea of duality and secret identity, a prominent theme -and often struggle- in the world of the Comic Book Superhero.

About Vernon
I am an Artist, Illustrator, Cartoonist, and Educator based in Cape Town, South Africa, working across a range of Mediums and Creative Disciplines.
My work is inspired by a lifelong love of Pop Art, Art Nouveau, and Popular Culture -- from Comic Books and Superheroes to Fantasy, Cinema, and the Spirit of Adventure and Wonder.
I favour Pen and Ink when working on Paper, while exploring a Mixed-media approach when working on Canvas - combining Oil, Acrylic, Ink, and Encaustic.
At the Heart of my Work is a simple idea: the ability to Imagine and Believe, and to draw Strength from that Belief. It is about becoming something greater by Believing in something greater.
Through The CrissCross Studio and ToonSchool, I share these ideas through Art, illustration, and Creative Teaching -- inviting others to explore their own Creativity and sense of Wonder.
