"Since art was not taken seriously in the past years and as a student in those days, I never thought I would become an artist, because people believed that once you completed your matric, you had to find a job, so that you could earn a good salary.
I decided to take art seriously, after I became close friends with Trevor Makhoba, Thami Jali, George Msimang and Terry-anne Stevenson. Through their belief in art and my own experience, I was inspired. I believe that this is one of the reasons that I became a successful artist."
Thami and I started exhibiting at 38 Essex Road (Cultural Eve), where we invited all artists as well as businessmen, especially "black" Africans who were not fully involved with visual art. From that idea, it brought a lot of change into my life, because there were a lot of parents who wanted to
introduce their young talented children to me, as well as artists themselves who wanted advice. I knew that I was talented, but I did not know whether I could give them enough help. I then decided to go to The Durban Institute of Technology Fine Art Department to get formal training.
My aim was to become a lecturer, although it did not go as planned. The Change in my life really started when I was given an opportunity to attend workshops at Makere University in Uganda and overseas. Through the experiences I gained from meeting different artists from other countries, I decided not to lose my own ideas. My own art is based on my culture and
reality. My dream was fulfilled when I was given the chance to teach The Velobala Group classes. For me, it was a good sign for coming closer to my goals, because my biggest dream is to help young artists to improve their talent.
By doing so, my experience of art has also changed. I have learnt to trust myself more than before. My involvement with the Community Art Mural Project, gave me more ideas for freedom of expression such as human rights,voter education etc. I take art as another way of educating people and also to give an awareness of what is wrong or right. Art be my voice."
