Elise's face is just the right beautiful face I wanted to paint for a long time. The morning she arrived with her blue scarf on. I knew to day is the day.My Guava tree were loaded with ripe fruit,placing it into my mothers old bread baking bowl was just to compliment her scarf colour.This was overall a joy to paint

About Maggie

My name is Maggie Smit and I'm a full-time artist. I have been in the creative business for as long as I can remember. My love for colour and design inspired me to give stimulating creative classes to pre-school children, I designed and manufactured jewellery and was also in the catering business for many years. Moving from Johannesburg to the Western Cape allowed me to be a full time Artist.

My love for travel and photography adds colour to the canvas and hundreds of photographic references onto my pin board. Travelling in South Africa has also deepened my awareness of colour, space and form. It's from this experience I create my emotions on canvas.

Although my first love is oil, I love experimenting with different mediums such as watercolours and pastels. My techniques include impressionism, abstract, impasto and using a palette knife. I paint seascapes, landscapes, still life, houses and portraits.

Exploring and learning is key and what we learn with pleasure we never forget. Ive been privileged to attend courses by Dale Elliott and weekly classes with Marnitz Steyn. Ive also studied under Wendy Martell. I belong to the Swellendam Photography Club and Art Beat, where I participate in quarterly exhibitions.
Im inspired by Hugo Naude, Adriaan Boshoff, Marnitz Steyn, Edward Seago, Turner, Claire Basler and the abstract works of Yoke Bakker and Kandinsky.
