About "Still Life with Red Wallpaper"

Still Life With Red Wallpaper, is one of a series of pastel still life pictures I made in 2023.
I enjoy drawing from arrangements I've set up in the studio. Occasionally I include objects I've found from roadside 'curio' sellers. Often they are very creatively constructed, far beyond the 'novelties' they are often dismissed for.
The tin star is woven from strips of tin cut from cold drink cans, over a wire frame. It's emblematic of various contexts for me, according to other forms, drapes, and color fields surrounding it.
I like the way it's begun to rust, aging it and softening the synthetic brightness of it's original colors. making it uniquely versatile as a still life element.
In turn the enameled jug and antique copper whistling kettle can change context because of the tin star's presence. Once recognized, the solid objects can take on more imaginative interest.
These saturated color values were built up using the best French pastels.
