About "Still Life with Yellow Drape and Mossie Flying"

I moved from Johannesburg to Philippolis in The Free State recently.
It seemed a good idea to start with a series of still life pictures. I was able to make a collection of still life objects which could suitably 'represent' the town's culture here.
After a while these pastel still life pictures seemed to require the addition of an imaginative element.
I added an (invented) art nouveau style of wall paper to the background and also a mossie flying indoors. It felt like an expression of the desire for freedom.
The yellow drape was hand embroidered in Pietermaritzburg before WW2.
I enjoyed drawing up the linear arrangement. It allowed for a flatness in the design, and some saturation of the colour.
I enjoy using pastel to it's full colour strength in as taut a linear arrangement of the shapes as drawing from life can provide.
