About "Study in Black and White"

The subject seems to me to be clutching his heart as if guarding a secret, representing the difficulty of baring one’s soul. This is a study in tonal strength with the lightest tones in the forehead going into the darkest on the chin and neck, framed by the stark contrast of the shirt. Textured brushwork indicates the roughening of skin towards the beard.
