About "The Ballerina"

After seeing a painting of a ballerina by world renowned artist Vladimir Volegov, I just had to paint my own ballerina. After obtaining a photo, I dressed a friend in a tutu and experimented with light from different angels to get it perfect. I did this painting by combining a number of techniques including alla prima, but also adding layers of glazes to achieve a softness associated with ballet dancers. It took quite a while to finish this painting as in the original picture the dancer were not wearing any shoes, and there was only a stark white background. So a bit of imagination, creativity and trial and error was necessary to achieve the end result, which is a painting that I am proud of.

About Rhen

Rhen Hanekom

Like most people, I struggle with my inner critic. But I get an indescribable satisfaction from the act of creating a painting. I spend a lot of time with each canvas, trying to find the right expression of light in a journey of discovery, knowing that when I do manage to find it I'll create something special. An object of value. I enjoy the journey of discovery almost as much as the finished work and the appreciation expressed by others.
Even accomplished artists work hard at their art, it is not merely an act of copying what they see in a mechanical way. Paintings created in this way can appear flat and lifeless. It's not easy to pin down, but there is another aspect; that of exploration and invention that informs the art, lending it a mood or atmosphere. Giving it life. I find inspiration daily in people, things and moments: a beautiful sunset, a stormy sea, a glint of light reflected from a kettle or simply the smile on a child's face.
Working in a realistic style, exploring the relationship between hues, form and tonal values is crucial and requires continuous awareness and careful study. I aim to render the essence of the subjects in front of me. Observing carefully, mixing twice, painting once. I become aware of the world around me, experience the pleasure of seeing and finding an alchemy between the paint, the subject and the moment.
When I am happy to hang a painting on my own wall, I know it is completed.
