Reference Heleenslaaf About "The Despairing Slave" This work is a figure from the composition "the Marriage Market" that illustrates a slave market in Cairo round about 1900. The target market was the sultans, who bought female slave for their harems to serve as concubines. I wanted to depict these women's hurt, shame and trauma - to be stolen from their loved ones and to live out their lives as slaves. |
