About "The Final Break Away"

After I had my breakdown and painted dozens of paintings as my art therapy, I finished it off with this painting. I really felt that it was all behind me and I could firmly and with great pride walk away from all the old wounds and hurt.

About Heidi

Heidi von Johnston

I was born and raised in South Africa. I spent on average 3 months a year on our family-owned Nature Reserve where wild animals roamed free. Our farm was situated close to the famous Kruger National Park in South Africa.

I was fortunate to have travelled the world extensively from an early age and have visited more than 55 countries.

My interest in art started in my mid 20's, where I was initially introduced to watercolor. Soon I realized that I wanted stronger vibrant colors in my artwork.

I then changed art teachers, after having to wait for more than a year for an opening at the top art school in the area. The BEST decision I made! My new Art teacher, Karin Daymond started me off only doing pencil drawings stills. It taught me so much on perspective and depth.

I now only paint oil on canvas. When painting, my main objective is to show the contrast of light and shade, next comes depth. I want people to feel drawn into the painting.

I lived in Italy for 20 years which exposed me to the typical Italian landscapes and lifestyle. I have also been part of several joint exhibitions in Italy with great success.

In 2019 I had a solo exhibition of 70 paintings which was held in Sansepolcro, which is situated in the Tuscany region of Italy and sold 80% of my exhibits.

Many other exhibitions were planned during 2020, but the Covid pandemic put a serious dampener on my plans, and I had to cancel at the time.

While living in Italy and longing for my home country, I was inspired to paint more African Art, which led to some of my best works.

In January of 2021, my life took a huge turn, and South Africa was calling! And in May of 2021 I decided to relocate back to Cape Town, South Africa for good. It was time to settle down - "There is no place like home!"

With the assistance of my Marketing Manager and partner, I manage to hold an exhibit once a month in Hermanus. This has proved to be a great decision ...
