About "The Mannequin"
The Mannequin
While painting The Mannequin, I visited the British Museum in London, where I was deeply inspired by the decorative pottery and sculptures in its collection. Their forms, symbols, and simplicity influenced the visual language of the painting.
The mannequin represents woman in general--the simplicity and absence of individual features make her a universal figure rather than a portrait of one particular woman. The arrow points toward her as a symbol of being a target, suggesting the pressures, expectations, and challenges directed at women.
At the time I painted this work, I was personally experiencing a strong sense of pressure, which became part of the emotional foundation of the painting. Yet the work also symbolizes hope. Although the woman is exposed and vulnerable, she is not without protection. The book placed behind her represents protection, knowledge, and a source of strength. It suggests that even in moments of pressure and difficulty, there are forces that can provide shelter and support.
The painting is connected to the idea of a "Race of Endurance"--the strength required to remain standing and move forward despite the difficulties encountered along life's journey. Ultimately, The Mannequin speaks not only of vulnerability and pressure, but also of resilience, protection, and the hope that allows us to continue.

About Salome
Salome High is a contemporary South African artist who studied Fine Art at the University of Pretoria. Her work reflects the spirit of the times, embracing the ever-evolving zeitgeist while remaining rooted in a philosophy of simplicity. Inspired by Le Corbusier's famous maxim, "Less is more," she seeks to distill her subjects to their essential beauty and character.
Working primarily from photographic references, Salome transforms observed reality into expressive, contemporary artworks. Her current body of work focuses on wildlife, capturing the strength, elegance, and individuality of each animal through a fresh artistic perspective. By introducing subtle elements of glamour and refinement, she creates a unique visual dialogue that celebrates the natural world while inviting viewers to see familiar subjects in a new light.
