About "The Outspan "

The painting shows a hunter’s camp where they have outspanned for the day – the half tent wagon in the foreground, the oxen set loose to graze and rest, their yokes lying temporarily abandoned in the grass. The flat topped thorn tree (Acacia) offers deep shade, but the men know the ground beneath is covered with thorny dry twigs. They prefer to camp beneath trees which shed no thorns. The scene is set in typical bushveld country with long golden grass and a towering sky with rain clouds.
