About "The Radium Beer Hall "

The Radium Beer Hall is a well known pub and restaurant in Orange Grove in Johannesburg.
Apart from the regular visitors there are people who come from far and wide to enjoy what the kitchen produces, and to listen to the various music performers who entertain them there. People enjoy watching sport on the tv screen.
I started the work when Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa ran for the presidency. It was reworked when the Covid 19 virus broke out.
There is a legend in The Radium that the bar counter, once part of another, older pub in town, was frequently stood upon by Mary Fitzgerald, the first female trade union leader in South Africa, when she exhorted miners to strike, using her trademark pickaxe handle to persuade them to pay attention and behave.
When I went to get takeaways there, I saw that the Covid virus was not greatly feared by it's regular attendees. This gave me the idea for an avenging Demeter instead of the figure of Mary Fitzgerald. This naturally altered the context of Mr Ramaphosa in my picture.
I used the traditional theme of the 'Bodega'or eating house, from older painting. The 'regulars' fitted this theme well. On the TV screen is a cricket match. Manny then owner of the Radium is seated just beyond the waitress. He was a feature of the establishment for decades, liked for his wit and relaxed bonhomie.
The countries' flags on the wall show those already being invaded by the Covid , in spite of the furious denials of it's reality by so many.
The picture was drawn up and painted in the Radium, working mainly on Mondays. Mr. Ramaphosa is still unlikely to visit it, so I used whatever reference I coud find. The other figures were made from drawings or photos, except the Demeter who I invented.
I worked on treated paper with oils.
