About "The Three Stages of Life"

Recently I was requested to produce a painting for a book cover, but the author eventually selected an existing work. The subject of the book, the Art of Living and Dying Consciously, is very close to my heart and the discussion I had with the author, was the inspiration for this work. The triptych typically represents the three stages: Childhood (O-18 yrs), Adulthood (18-42, Midlife crisis) and Old Age (42-onwards). I have made use of many symbols, but the main ones: The Wheel of Fortune for Adulthood. This represents the impermanence of all things, but also the Law of Karma. Death for midlife crisis, since the death of the life up to that stage is necessary before a new stage can start. This can be very difficult for many. The World for Old Age, represents the culmination of a cycle and also the Integration of the Self. The Foolrepresents the Self, and I have used it twice at the beginning and the end of life.

About Eliseo

Eliseo Aceto

I was born and spent the first 14 years of my life in a small town in the South of Italy. In 1964 I immigrated to SA with my family and have lived here since.
In 2001 I gave up my career in the chemical industry to pursue a more inclusive holistic lifestyle in which Art and Philosophy were to play a significant role. Soon thereafter I was fortunate to find an insightful patient and dedicated art teacher, Zaria de Villiers, who was able to draw out my talent and develop my own style.
Initially I painted landscapes using photographs as inspiration, but realised that these were not representative of the changes taking place within me. I discovered that I could approximate concepts and ideas through the use of universal symbols and colours and so elements of surrealism crept into my work. My need to paint therefore is driven by my urge to record or maybe punctuate certain stages in my life, as well as the pleasure I derive in expressing them on canvas.
I offer these works in the hope that they may serve as a catalyst, a point to ponder, for others who may be on their own path of individuation.
Thank you for your interest in my work
