About "The Watchful Hare"
The Watchful Hare began with a moment of encounter.
While cycling through the nature reserve, I came across a hare standing completely still in the field. It was alert and aware, quietly scanning its surroundings for danger. For a brief moment, neither of us moved.
That encounter became the starting point for this oil painting.
Rather than presenting the hare simply as wildlife, I wanted to capture its extraordinary attentiveness: the upright ears, direct gaze and contained stillness of an animal whose survival depends upon noticing the smallest change in its surroundings.
Painted using traditional layered oil-painting and glazing techniques, the work builds the fur through subtle shifts of brown, ochre and grey against a restrained landscape. Fine highlights along the ears and coat bring the animal forward from the softer background while preserving the quiet atmosphere of the original encounter.
The Watchful Hare forms part of my continuing exploration of Solar Realism, in which natural light, observation and the quiet presence of ordinary subjects become central to the image.
Original oil painting on panel, 40 x 30 cm. Framed. Signed by the artist and supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity.

About Leone
Leone Tonkinson is a South African-born fine artist based in the Netherlands and founder of Solar Realism, a painting approach centred on the presence and character of natural light.
Working primarily in oils, she combines traditional layered painting techniques with close observation, creating still lifes, wildlife and botanical works marked by luminosity, quiet presence and finely observed detail.
Her South African roots and her life within the Dutch landscape both inform her work, bringing together warmth, nature and a strong sense of place. Rather than simply depicting a subject, Tonkinson seeks the moment when light, atmosphere and presence give it emotional resonance.
Her work is held in private collections and exhibited in the Netherlands and internationally.

Exhibitions
Leone Tonkinson has exhibited in both South Africa and Europe, with recent exhibitions in the Netherlands. Her work is held in private collections internationally.
She is the founder of Solar Realism, a painting approach that explores light not simply as illumination, but as an active presence within the subject. Through traditional layered oil-painting techniques, careful observation and controlled natural light, form, atmosphere and emotional presence emerge together.
Her work applies this approach to still life, wildlife and the natural world, where reflected light, transparency, texture and subtle shifts in colour become part of the subject itself.
Education
Formal training in architecture, design, and classical oil
