About "Thinking Out the Box - Madiba"

This pastel painting was taken from a photograph of Nelson Mandela gazing out of his cell window, cell 46664,across Table Bay towards Cape Town and Table Mountain. I imagine him contemplating how he is going to bring peace and freedom to a land ravaged by the years of apartheid. To me he has the creative mind of the artist. The ability to think out of the box. Hence I named this piece " THINKING OUT OF THE BOX - MADIBA ". Madiba is a name most South Africans would call him. It is an African name meaning " Grandfather "

About Lance

Lance Barnard

Since my earliest memories I,ve had a desire to draw.Growing up as a child my parents encouraged this desire by getting me to do portraits of all the family members of people that used to come round to us for visits. This was round about preshool.I have early memories of copying Tarzan pictures from comic books.
When I got to High school I was constantly in trouble with my teachers because within no time my work books would land up with no pages in them because instead of concentrating on the given subject I would bide my time drawing in them and then tearing out the pages with drawings on so that my teachers would not discover them.
After school I studied Mechanical Engineering and received NTC 4 distinctions in Technical Drawing.I became bored with the subjects and only wanted to pursue art so after completing NTC 4 much to the dismay of my teachers I left the college.
I then tried three times to get accepted into the Fine Arts course at the technikon but was rejected all three times reasons being I did not have a matric English and Afrikaans certificate. What the hell language has to do with visual art , till this day I still can,t understand.
Well, this was not enough to discourage me and I decided to teach myself and I accomplished this by maticulously copying the old masters like Michelangelo in acrylic paint. Like anything practice makes perfect but I still maintain that Fine Art is a life long apprenticeship and the artist will spend his entire life trying to capture the beauty of one Lily and never get it right.
It is the creative process from blank canvas to completed work that altermately inspires me.There is no adrenalaine rush and inspiration to me like having a clean white canvas in front of me to begin a creation with. I am in my element when I am busy painting and miserable when not. I have not yet developed a specific style but I believe everything happens in its own sweet time and I still have a lot to discover as for as my medium goes.
I hope my work will bring some joy to the world.
commissions to do portraits are welcome.
