About "Untitled 1"
Ezekiel Madiba was born in 1948 in Eastwood, near Pretoria. He began drawing at the age of fourteen and acquired a keen interest in woodcarving. His artistic training was restricted to the training he received in his high school years due to the lack of funds and facilities.
In his search for expression, Madiba discovered the work of fellow South African artist, Raymond Andrew and it was Andrew who taught him to master the woodcut technique that has subsequently become his primary medium. Madiba uses this medium to run off limited edition wood and lino-cut prints as well as create unique incised paintings.
Madiba's principle subject matter is the people and social environment of South Africa. His work portrays a lifestyle, and is not so much a social commentary as it is a social documentary. It depicts a way of life, a traditional culture and a South African spirit that has been shaped by personal history and everyday life. Madiba manages to capture the essence of South African dynamism with emotion and humorous warmth. His Christian faith also plays a dominant role in much of his work. Township customs, beliefs, occupations and different moods of the people around him are visualised with humanism, which has a powerful emotional effect because of its strong but simple shapes and bold compositions.
Ezekiel Madiba has an extremely sensitive approach to his environment and an extraordinary ability to capture its mood. His artworks are a sincere reflection of South African life and culture.
