About Bernard

I took art as a subject at school but started drawing from a young age. During agricultural studies at Stellenbosch I took lessons briefly at the Stellenbosch Technicon under Edith ten Kate. I started painting seriously late in life after an agricultural career in Rhodesia and South Africa. I prefer nature subjects such as landscapes, animals and flowers but also enjoy doing portraits. I am mostly self-taught. Artists I admire are Piet van Heerden, Hoefsloot, Pierneef, Wenning, Fasciotti, Richard Rennie, Vermeer, van Gogh and Buchner, whom I was privileged to know at Stellenbosch. I think it is our privilege as humans to enjoy beauty in nature and to record it.
