About David

Light is everything. Draughtsmanship and composition are vital. One line on a canvas may be inspiring - correctly drawn, correctly placed. I am inspired by nature. It is never entirely as one expects but always perfect. The more I observe, the more I am inspired and only when you draw do you truly observe.

My favourite artists are Jan Vermeer, Van Gogh, Raymond Harris-Ching and Frank Hampson, illustrator of the Eagle comic. All were or are master draughtsmen.

My paintings combine both my obsession for finely observed detail and looseness and fluidity. After a career in illustration which spanned 30 years, I spent almost half that again loosening-up. These days I am happy with the result but still continue to learn. When artists stop learning they should lay down their tools.
