Deon Viljoen writes,” Over the past fifty years Erik Laubscher has established himself not only as South Africa’s foremost post-war landscape painter but also as a prominent art educator, administrator and a defender of artists’ rights and the validity of modern art against indifference.
Erik’s signature works are based on the landscapes of the Boland, Overberg, Kouebokkeveld, the Karoo and Namibia which he has consistently scrutinized, deciphered and interpreted to capture both the underlying structure and the psychology of the land..”
Melvyn Minnaar writes, “ Erik Laubscher is a part of local culture history. It is a special, well-deserved place which did not always allow due recognition for his best art – including some of the most magnificent landscapes of the Western Province, rarely recorded by others.”
Laubscher’s achievements rewarded him with a Carnegie Study Grant to the USA in 1966. The Cape Arts Medal 1972, S.A.Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns – Besondere Erepenning vir Skilderkuns 1990, the Tercentenary Foundation Award for Outstanding contributions to the Visual arts 1994.
Laubscher founded the Ruth Prowse School of Art in 1970 and retired as principal at the end of 1995.
