About Rita

Rita Weber

Rita Weber was associated with the National Botanical Institute in Pretoria for 8 years, 3 years as in house/ full time Botanical Artist, and 5 years as freelance illustrator.

She did 41 colour plates for the series, Flowering Plants of Africa, she illustrated the Bryophyta-Flora of Southern Africa, as well as numerous pen sketches for publications such as; Crassulaceae-Flora of Southern Africa and Aloe – Journal of the SA Aloe and Succulent Society.

She also illustrated Margaret Roberts’ book, Cook with Herbs and Spices, as well as the book, Mooi maar gevaarlik.

Her work is widely published in South African and international Botanical magazines and journals.

She started painting in oil in 1985, after studying under the renowned wildlife artist and art lecturer, the late Johan Grobler.

Her recent work includes wildlife, flowers, and children.

Exhibitions

Exhibitions where her work were exhibited, includes; Botanical studies, Pretoria Art Museum in 1987. International Botanical Art Exhibition at the Everard Read Gallery in 1992. Group exhibitions at the Royal Horticultural Society in Kew, England in 1990 and 1992. The SA group won gold medals at both shows.
She also exhibited at the Kirstenbosch Biennale in 2004.
