About "In a State of Mental Bondage 1/3"

The first portrait covers the theme of mental bondage that is influenced by self-infliction. It comes from a place of self-blame, self-violence, lack of self-acceptance, isolation, self-starvation and the everlasting search to mental freedom.

About Jacques

Jacques Steyn

Born in Paarl, Western Cape and grew up in Ceres, I had the privilege of having a childhood in the countryside. Art was since the age of 6 big factor in my life, and I started sketching realistic portraits since the age of 9. I was professionally trained during my school years and started selling paintings from the age of 14. I ended up studying Architecture at the University of the Free State where my perspective in life completely got thrown into a new direction. My rebirth in art came when I moved to Cape Town after my studies to pursue my career as an architect and part-time artist.

I'm an artist inspired by the social circumstances of the modern age. Through the form of portraits, I tell the stories and struggles of our generation. I find a big interest in understanding culture, and find myself expressing that discoveries through the form of art.

I paint primarily in oil but am always experimenting with watercolors and pencil on the side. Most of the oil paintings for sale have gone through a series of layers to enhance the final color palette and to give the painting a form of depth that can't be captured through a camera.
