About "Mandala No.1: Peace"

Mandalas are symbols of wholeness and change. This mandala represents a place of inner peace, a sanctuary where I go to meditate and be alone, where I am protected from the turmoil of the world. I wanted to create an enclosure that would be protective without being claustrophobic. This enclosure is shaped in such a way that it has visible exits and entrances, although it is containing.

About Judy

Judy Backhouse

I draw and paint because it gives me joy. I am currently working on a series of portraits. Last year I completed a series of mandalas, exploring an old interest in symmetry. Mandalas are symbols of wholeness and change; as such I find them a particularly good vehicle to explore emotions. A lot of my earlier work was based on dreams.
